VA - Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs of All Time

This list was published by Rolling Stone Magazine to 2004. In 2010 they published a revised list. What I have here is the original 2004 list. This was published on another site. The music was great -- everything is 320 CBR MP3's. But there was some room for improvement with the tags. I retagged the collection. I found a cool new graphic to serve as the album art which is shown above. I also added a playlist file, but you will need over 31 hours to play it all the way through. The new rar file has a 5% recovery record.

I am not going to post a tracklist. But while the collection was in my tag editor I was able to sort on various tags and gather some interesting trivia about the collection. The earliest song is Rollin' Stone by Muddy Waters from 1948. And the latest song is Hey Ya! by Outkast from 2003. Only three songs from the current century made the list. Just eyeballing the list as sorted by years, it is clear the the 1960's are the decade with the most songs. I would need to actually count to see if the 1950's or the 1970's came in second. But the 50's, 60's and 70's together dominate the list.

Next, I sorted by Artist. Well, Billy Joel is one of many artists who have only one song (Piano Man) in the list. The Beatles have the most songs... 23. Also, John, George, and Paul each have one song as a solo artist. The Rolling Stones are second with 14 songs. Bob Dylan has twelve songs. And Elvis Presley has eleven.

So far there were few real surprises, I expected that 50's, 60's, and 70's would dominate. I also expected The Beatles to contribute the most songs. OK, I was a bit surprised that Billy Joel has only one song. But here is a real surprise, at least for me... A few songs made the list twice! Blue Suede Shoes by Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins. Mr. Tambourine Man by Bob Dylan and The Byrds. And finally, Walk this Way by Aerosmith and Run-DMC.

No list of 500 top songs is not going to satisfy everyone; but on balance, this is a very nice collection.
